The Exchange Building

I lived here for 1 year and absolutely loved it. The location is great, the property manager is super friendly and accessible and the views are awesome. I loved my balcony and all the sunshine I got through my south-facing, floor-to-ceiling windows. I also love that the building is dog friendly and there are a lot of friendly dogs there. The management had a building-wide summer party on the rooftop lounge area and that was a ton of fun. The rooftop social area has killer views of sunset in summer. The building is well-designed to keep the units really quiet. I can only think of 1 time the whole year I heard a noise from somewhere else in the building. The view of sunrise from my unit was spectacular (see photos).

Well, where do I start?... I'd rented apartments before in Los Angeles, and one before in Kalamazoo, for context. I was progressing through my 2nd Year of Medical School at WMed, for additional context regarding time sensitivity to noise and unplanned disruptions. I'll cover the actual discrete experience in this review, but if anyone wants my feedback on the early months of the move, when the first tenants moved in, I can provide an extra fill-in write up as I was one of those original first tenants, and contrary to stories (I myself even heard), things were not bad, at all. But with all respect to other tenants, perspectives do differ on the period. Regarding the apartment itself, I've been here for over a year in the 11th floor, on the south side of the building. I moved here in the end of 2020 and it was one of the best choices I’ve made. It is the best spot in Downtown Kalamazoo by far and can’t be beat. For starters, cannot beat the view. My unit faced north and with every sunrise and sunset it was breathtaking. Did I mention the view?! Second, if there were any maintenance requests or requirements, they were very quick. Third, this spot is right downtown. Walking distance to just about everything. Right on the mall and less than 15 min walking distance to 600 kitchen and bar - bing one of the furthest restaurants downtown from The Exchange. Angela made my move in and out way too easy, as well as making the 2 years I was there a breeze. I’ll definitely remember the time I had there and would recommend to anyone if they want the perfect spot

Very poor customer service. The property manager took forever to return my emails, never sent over the virtual tour links she'd promised me and then, after I submitted an application, ghosted me altogether. That tells me something about how they might respond to their tenants if they don't even respect their applicants.

Best apartment complex in Kalamazoo. Nice people in the building. You can not hear much from inside your unit. Angela, the property manager, was great. She's very responsive before, during and after your stay. Maintenance is prompt and urgent when you need them. The views are impressive all year round. You'll appreciate the ability to press down on the elevator, walk outside and choose from the many restaurants and shops available at your doorstep. The secured parking was also a plus.
