Sarasota County Building Inspections

Have to be the worst ran building municipality in the state of Florida. I feel sorry for anyone trying to accomplish any kind of construction here.

I have been handling permits for Charlotte County and North Port for about three years now. While dealing with some degree of obstacles is expected with any city or county due to numerous moving parts and changing regulations, I have found working with Sarasota County particularly challenging. The exact issue is unclear, but it might be due to staffing shortages. It is difficult to reach anyone directly by phone, and typically, you have to leave a message with a receptionist who, if unable to assist, relays your message to someone else who will supposedly call back later with an answer. This callback can sometimes take several days, if it happens at all. The people in this office are incredibly helpful and made the entire process easier than I thought it would be. I came from a place where you could tear your house down and build another in place without anyone noticing (or caring). So being new to Sarasota, I heard nothing but horror stories about fees and hassles and violations. But the truth is, as long as your plans are right and your work is to code, the process is a breeze. Everyone I’ve worked with from the people at the counter to the plans examiners and the inspectors have been great. Most of the complaints you’ll hear about permits in Sarasota likely come from people trying to cheat the system and sneak things through. You can’t do that here — and you shouldn’t. I really find it hard to believe anyone at this permitting office is capable of being less than cooperative, respectful and very professional. I'm guessing those that are dissatisfied with the service provided have a different reason. When people make mistakes, don't follow rules and regulations, there's a price to pay. Just because they take those payments does not make them bad or unprofessional. I personally have not been to a bldg department that was more calm, organized, and willing to help than this one. Keep up the good work!!

I pulled my own permit as a homeowner and did not have any problems. Everyone from Sarasota County Building Inspectors was very helpful and walked me through the entire process. They do their job well and are great at inspecting mechanical, electrical, and building. They only find problems that are unsafe - I thank them for keeping us all safe and sound!
