Cortland at McLean

I had a lease with Ashby, then Elme for 3 years. I decided to end the lease because I was moving out of state and I’m so grateful I did. Bona, Debbie, Paul, Clever, and the entire front desk/maintenance staff were more than AMAZING throughout my entire lease. Prompt with responses, maintenance requests, friendly, and helpful always. Upon my move out in November was around the same time management was switching over to Cortland. In the last few weeks of my lease there they changed the email address for requests. Email response time turned from same day to no response at all. This happened a couple of times, but I summed it up to them being busy because of all the changes - no biggie. A very well managed apartment community that is very secure with exceptional maintenance, cleaning staff and concierge front desk, services. The building offers underground parking and a non-smoking environment with numerous additional amenities. The overall this apartment community equals or exceeds those found in many high end and costlier condominium complexes. Clearly something you should consider when looking for an apartment in the McLean area.

I’ve lived at this apartment complex nearly my entire life, and for over 8 years I’ve watched the quality of management and maintenance steadily decline. What used to feel like a community has turned into a business that clearly prioritizes profit over people. The building is poorly maintained — every year rent increases, yet there’s absolutely no visible improvement or return for residents, especially the elderly and families who’ve been here for years. The so-called “fitness center” hasn’t been updated since we first moved in. The pool facility has recurring issues, including burst pipes and long periods of closure. My wife and I moved in at the end of 2024 and at the time the property was being managed by Elm communities. I can’t speak for what management was like before Elm but we had a pretty good experience with the Elm management team. Recently the apartment building was purchased by Cortland and management has shifted to Cortland as well. In the 1 month that Cortland has taken over, management has been horrendous. Here is a list of issues I have witnessed first hand. 1) The portal to pay rent was not up in time to make timely payments. It caused stress because not only was the portal not up and running but once it was, there was no amount listed to pay. Then took another period of time for utilities to show up…. I’ve been living at The Ashby at McLean for almost five months now, and so far, it’s been a really comfortable experience. One of the best things about it is the location—it’s right in the center of McLean, with easy access to shops, restaurants, and main roads. The area is very walkable, quiet, and feels safe, making it a good fit for both families and working professionals. The building is well taken care of, and the maintenance team is quick and efficient. The front desk and leasing office have also been friendly and helpful whenever I’ve had questions or needed support. The gym and common spaces are kept clean and are nice to have, though updating some of the amenities could make them even better.
